2018 Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition-Silver!
The signature varietal that launched the BARRA of Mendocino brand in 1997, this petite sirah boasts grapes planted in the rich, red rock soils of the Barra’s Redwood Valley Vineyards home ranch, as well as the 50 acre hillside vineyard, Bella Collina, located high above the Ukiah valley in Mendocino County. Following the advice of Karl Wente and Louis Martini in the early 60’s, Charlie planted the petite sirah varietal, and continues to bottle limited quantities of this luscious, hearty wine.
86% of the grapes for this vintage were from Bella Collina Vineyard and 14% from Redwood Valley Vineyards. The fruit was harvested on September 3rd, 2015 with a brix of 27.8. The grapes were fermented for 8 days, reaching a maxium temperature of 80 F, giving the wine its nice dark color (almost black) and big, bold tannins. Then the wine was transferred to 100% French oak, in which 20% was new Kalina oak barrels, for the next 19 months. The other barrels were 2011 & 2013, which added a small amount of oak and complexity to the wine.
